Drenched in Reality
This morning I decided to go to the Bass Pro Shop and pick up a new pair of moccasin style deck shoes. I wasn't planning on making a production out of going and wasn't going to be gone long so I asked if Earl would like to ride along. He was dressed and ready before I was. He loves going into stores to see the enormous amounts of things for sale and of course the people. Wal-Mart is a standing favorite, but he has never seen Bass Pro and I assumed heâd enjoy that too.
After a slow-moving drive through the construction on the interstate, we finally arrived at the store. It was amazingly busy and we had to park very far from the entrance. It looked like it could rain at any minute, but we opted to leave the umbrella in the car as any self-respecting man would do. The huge front doors with the antler handles stopped Earl in his tracks as he had to inspect them closely. This, of course, caused a backup of people behind us. Once in the store he again stopped dead in his tracks to look up and around; other customers pushed their way past us. "C'mon Earl let's get out of the way of these folks," I said as I grabbed his arm and lightly pulled him toward the turnstiles. "Hello guys, welcome to Bass Pro," said an older man with a sincere smile. Earl wanted to stop and chat with the friendly boy, but I gave him another tug. Finally, we were in the store, and away from the hurrying crowd.
The store is large and there are many ways to get lost, so I asked Earl if there was anything he wanted to look at with me before I headed out to the footwear department. He said he would just mosey around looking at this and that. I could see the potential for problems, so I suggested he look around in the huge fishing department while I quickly bought a pair of shoes. I added that after I had what a came for, we could walk around together and see the whole store if he was really interested. Before leaving him, I said, âFor now please just stay right in this vicinity. There is much to see and you'll still be looking at fishing stuff once I grab that pair of shoesâ. Trying to see some sign of comprehension in his darting wide eyes, I added, "DO you promise me that you will be right here when I come back?" He nodded. "I am serious Earl are you going to be right around here?"
"I will not be more than 20 feet from this spot, okay?", he said looking off in the distance annoyed by my insistence. As I walked away I looked back; he was still standing there looking at the first fishing rod in a line of hundreds. âThat'll keep him busy,â I thought as I headed up the stairs.
